Data Centre Development

Develop the site and the power strategy together.

We develop data centre projects with energy supply planned from the outset. On-site generation and wheeled renewable electricity are compared with grid supply against the facility’s operating requirements and planned expansion.

The aim is a credible route to power and a competitive electricity cost before major development commitments are made.

25–33% annual solar supply
R2.2–2.9m annual energy-purchase savings per average MW

24/7 facility load, with grid energy at R2.00/kWh replaced by delivered solar at R1.00/kWh.

Facility MW includes cooling and other overheads. Worked example with illustrative prices.

Location decisions informed by energy and infrastructure

A data centre needs power, connectivity, a suitable climate and land, matched to the workload it will run. We assess these together with our in-house tools, and validate demand and connectivity with prospective users and carriers. We can bring demand to locations where we develop generation, or develop energy supply where the demand already is.

Grid capacity, fibre service and route diversity are confirmed with the relevant providers before a site is progressed.

An energy strategy for the full facility

We assess electricity demand across IT equipment, cooling and other facility systems, including ramp-up and future phases, and compare every supply option against the same load and availability requirements.

On-site generation serves suitable daytime demand and wheeling extends renewable supply beyond the site’s own capacity. Storage, backup and grid infrastructure are sized to the operator’s design and reliability requirements.

A transparent electricity cost comparison

We compare the proposed energy arrangement with a grid-only electricity supply case, including residual grid purchases, network and demand charges, storage losses and relevant operating costs. The comparison identifies the assumptions that have the greatest effect on savings over the project term.

Development programme and decision gates

For each candidate site we map grid capacity, fibre routes, land rights and environmental approval, and sequence development work around the items that decide delivery. You receive a site comparison, a connection and supply plan, and a development programme with its decision gates.

We coordinate with data centre designers, operators, network providers and investment partners to define scope, responsibilities and the route to delivery.
